    Wool tapestry, 'A Mother's Love'

She sits on the floor with a clay jar and cup, stealing a moment of rest in her busy day. But first of all, she turns toward the child tied in a shawl on her back. She tenderly kisses the chubby-cheeked toddler, who returns a look of sheer contentment. Leoncio Tinoco's extraordinary handloomed tapestry pays homage to the Andean woman as he details her surroundings. But above all, it is a tribute to loving, caring mothers everywhere.

ENGLISH: "My name is Leoncio Tinoco Rodriguez, but people call me 'Tino.' I was born on September 27, 1954 in San Pedro de Cajas in Tarma, an area often referred to as 'The Pearl of the Andes.' I grew up amidst twisted strands of wool, surrounded by weavers. The region's plants, forest moss and bark are part of me too, as important as the art of weaving.

"Well, I guess the art of weaving is like an excellent friend to me. Early in life I developed the 'técnica del relleno' or 'filling technique,' which consists of placing dyed, untwisted wool between strands of wool yarn in such a way that the tapestry ends up looking as though it were painted.

"I studied weaving in an artisan workshop called Vegadi. I studied painting, but specialized in weavings. I have since participated in many art contests and exhibitions. Let me mention a few of the awards I have won:
    - Honorable mention in the First National Contest of artistic models and designs in Lima in 1991.
    - First place for textiles in the IV National Inti Raymi Artisan Awards in Lima, 1995.
    - Third place for textiles in the International Festival in Miami, Florida, 1996.
    - First place for textiles in the V National Inti Raymi Artisan Awards/ National Museum in Lima, 1996.
    - First place for specialty textiles in the VIII National Inti Raymi Artisan Awards in Lima, 1999.
I have also shown my works at various expositions in the following venues:
The Central Reserve Bank Museum in Lima, 1992.
The Peruvian-Japanese Cultural Family Center in Lima, 1993.
The Amauta Artisan Collective Exposition in Lima, 1994
The Peru-North American Cultural Institute in Arequipa, 1995.
Individual Exposition at the Auditorium of the Park of Identity in Huancayo, 1998.

Desde entonces, he ganada muchos premios, incluyendo:
    - Exposición Familiar Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano, Lima, 1994.
    - Exposición Familiar Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano, Arequipa, 1995.
