    Ghanaian wood mask, 'Greatest God'

Horns create the sensation of soaring height in this exceptional West African mask. By George Asante, it depicts the deity Obudumama, known to be the greatest god. Asante carves a design that originates with the Akwapim people from the Aburi area of Ghana.

    George Asante

George Asante was born in 1963 in a suburb of Accra. In 1982 – just one year after leaving high school – he sojourned in the Republic of Nigeria for some four years, coming back to Ghana in 1986 to invest a little capital he had accumulated while there.

After a while, convinced that better fortunes awaited him in life ahead, he turned to wood and the talent of carvers in the Akuapim hills. In 1990 he settled there to begin training as a carver. By the time he graduated, Asante had become the real artist he always knew he was. Four years of careful training had not been undertaken for common standards. Not only did Asante's background knowledge of woodwork help him, but an inbred acumen contrived to bring to the surface a reckonable and talented carver.

Asante, who is married and shares three sweet children with his wife, believes in the strengths and aesthetic values of the woods that he and other colleagues transform into works of art. For good reason, he works out many different forms from these materials – sese wood, cedar wood and twenenboa wood in particular.

George is an amazing artisan. His ""executioner"" mask is both fearsome and beautiful. I highly recommend this artist!...
