"I was born [...] in the Kashmir valley, where the tradition of carpet weaving and chain stitching is as old as the land itself."
"I was born in August, 1967, in the Kashmir valley, where the tradition of carpet weaving and chain stitching is as old as the land itself. Hailing from a family of Srinagar, I learned the art in my childhood, but it is for the last 12 years or so that I started off as an independent entrepreneur.
"For chain stitching of carpets we use a hassle cotton base, sketch out the design or impress it with a wooden die prepared by our master designer. Then, four artisans begin chain-stitching with pure wool from four sides giving rise to a well-prepared structure. It takes around 8-10 days to make a rug, and together with our master craftsman in Srinagar, I do most of the designs.
"The demand for chain-stitched rugs has increased, however, most people have been mistakenly led to believe that such sophisticated products are woven on a machine and they are thus hesitant to purchase.
"I have not only taught this art to many people but also helped them in developing their own self-sufficient units. I have participated in several fairs in India and abroad - Singapore, for example - having received an award.
"I would certainly want this art to continue in our family, and my immediate business plans are to give a worldwide exposure to our rugs. In this direction, our association with Novica will prove very fruitful. I believe our products will gain good acceptance amidst the valued customers of Novica."
Syed Izaz Hussein also demonstrates superior skill in the realm of papier maché, and his workshop offers beautiful, intricate works crafted in this method. Some 700 years ago Shah Hamadan, the Persian Sufia, came to Kashmir via the Silk Route and introduced the art of papier maché. Since that time, generations of Hussein's family have perpetuated the craft. Hussein even holds a copyright in certain teal-colored designs and patterns which he incorporates into select papier maché works.

Mr. Hussein: Thank you so much for the beautifull carpets I just received. They are more beautiful than I could have possibly imagined. Also thank you very much for the lovely box and specially for the post card. I am presently looking for someone to help me translate your postcard. I look forward to seeing more of your wonderful work in the future. Thanks again and lots of luck Jose L. Mendez
I bought a selection of Mr. Hussein's papier mache hearts and was very pleased with them. The patterns were lovely and the colors vibrant and clear. These will make lovely Christmas tree ornaments or decorations for other uses. I also liked the handcarved letter opener that came as a bonus with my package!

I bought ‘Say it with Hearts’ as a gift. They are all stunning and have made a wonderful addition to our friend’s home. Thank you so much for sharing your art.
My experience with Syed was excellent! My rug is gorgeous, better than what was pictured on the web. It was delivered much sooner than I had anticipated. It came very nicely wrapped with a thank you card from the artist. It was a pleasure doing business with Syed and I would not hesitate to purchase from him again.
I'm very pleased with the exquisite and unusual handmade Christmas ornaments ordered from Syed Izaz Hussein! Thank you for wrapping them so carefully and nicely for the long trip from India to the USA. They will not be hung on a tree but rather incorporated into my mantel design this year. They will lend an exotic touch in the familiar forms of bells and balls. The outrageous part of this is that they cost about the same as the mundane, mass produced and often tacky Christmas ornaments available in every American store during the holiday season. I feel really good about the quality for the price and highly recommned the products! Thank you! Lori
The pilow covers I ordered are beautiful. I couldn't be more pleased with their design or craftsmanship. Thank you.
Beautiful craftsmanship. A truly beautiful piece if art.
What beautiful work. I have just been thrilled with the pillows you created. Thank you very much for you are a true artist. Sincerely, R. Streng

The pashmina is wonderful. Congratulations for the superb job you did. My wife is very happy to have it.
What a beautiful package to open! When I received my silk embroider shawl with your postcard (such a personal and artistic touch), is like a breath of fresh air in the ""mass production world"" we live in every day. And thank you NOVICA, it's a truly brilliant idea, where both costumers and artists benefit!

Mr Hussein's lovely pashmina shawl, ""Fresh Adornment"", arrived by mail today -- so soon after I ordered it. I couldn't be more pleased with the quality and beauty of this soft, luxurious wrap. It came neatly folded and tucked into a pretty tassled shawl bag which was covered in tissue and colorful handmade wrapping paper tied up with a beautiful embroidered cloth ribbon. What a treat!
I have received Mr. Hussein's shawl; it is absolutely breathtaking!!!! I have purchased many shawls on the Internet, but this one is exceptionally soft, bright and colourful. This is why I purchased other shawls from this great artist, and I know it's just the beginning of a list... I would like to thank M. Hussein for his work and for giving us so much beauty and enchantment; I thank him too for his nice and personal words.
Thank you for the beautiful shawl 'Golden Berries' - received so quickly after order and utterly lovely. Having been to Srinagar and the wider countryside in 1988, I am so pleased to have such a beautiful reminder of your country. I am really glad artists like yourself have international access, we are also very privileged to receive your work. I will now be a regular visitor to this site and to view your work, which I will also recommend to friends. Very best wishes Sharon Davies

Mr. Hussein has done it again! My ""Ruby Salmon"" & ""Floral Daydream"" shawls are absolutely stunning! After receiving my first order from this talented artist I just had to order more. I feel lucky to find such exquisite embroidery at a very affordable price. Thank you again!
Syed... Thank you with all my heart for the incredible talent which you share with us. I have purchased three shawls, all the same pattern and color, and when I opened the packages, actual tears came to my eyes as I saw the beauty of them. I am an amateur interior designer with an emphasis on theme and period spaces. Your work adds the exotic touch that my 'Indian/Moroccan' rooms need for color, design and depth of character. Dear Mr. Hussein, I just received 2 shawls ""Evening Adornment"" and ""Burning Desire"", and was delighted with the colors and quality of these gorgeous Pashminas. My husband was really surprised and pleased when he saw the ""Evening Adornment"" shawl, since the color is so rich and vibrant, and rare. I now have ordered many shawls and throws from you, and continue to be happy with the quality and beauty of the products. I hope to see even more interesting colors and designs from you in the future, and hope you will continue to offer these items at an affordable price so many will be able to enjoy the beauty of your handwork. Mr. Hussein, you are truly an artist. I spent days trying to decide which of your shawls to order, and finally settled on ""Romance"". I've never seen a shawl so beautifully made, light but warm, and the embroidery is lovely. Many thanks for creating something that I enjoy wearing so much.
I love my shawl. The details are amazing. I was so impressed with his work that I bought one for my mother also. She loved it. Syed Izaz Hussein does beautiful work. I will definitely come back and shop for more.
Dear Mr Hussain, your shawl Wild Crimson arrived in Sweden today and it has really made my day! This is my second shawl från Kashmir, India, (I am not quite sure but the other one was probably also made by you though more quiet black and white) and both are beautiful and unique, the latest even more, due to its absolutely intricate and vibrant red embroidery. I often visit Novica, and especially the Indian shawls pages, just for the pleasure of looking at those beautiful things! Thank you once again! Best wishes Barbara Bromberger, Malmö, Sweden
As I expected. Your wool shawl `wild Garden is lovely. Thank you! Regards Anne May
Gorgeous I loved them both!!!
I love the aqua wool scarf I ordered from you. It really helps me keep my neck warm in the Scandinavian wind! It's very pretty and it fits with practicalyl everything! An amazing good quality everyday scarf :)

Dear Syed, I cannot thank you enough for the delicate artistry and excellence of the shawl, ""Following Sea"". It took my breath away when I saw it, and once again, I thought: 'I am collecting something beautiful (from Novica) that I never thought I'd own in my lifetime; it will be an heirloom.' Seriously. The embroidery is intricate and subtle and the variation in colour also complex. The texture of the underlying wool is refined and elegant. The needlework is such that the shawl can be worn fully reversed and nobody would know the difference. Thank you, Syed, for adding something exquisite to my life. I would add that this shawl would work as a light-to-medium weight transitional accessory for those of us living in colder climates or as a winter-weight shawl for those living in warm climates. It could be either dressy or casual, depending on what's worn underneath.
