Born in 1975, Nita Timorisna comes from a small town in a valley between the Bromo and Butak volcanoes, in East Java. She grew up in the countryside, in what she describes as a traditional environment. "I enjoyed learning all I could about Indonesian traditions," Nita recalls. "I also loved to observe our rich nature as I went by on my daily walks.
"I often traveled from Java to Sumatra as a teenager, to meet my father's relatives. That's when I began to develop a keen interest in traditional home decoration, which led me to design lamps and various small items – a hobby that I hope I'll never grow out of."
"I moved to Bali in 1997, and I discovered a plethora of arts and crafts. I also became aware of the Western influence, which gave me a new creative impulsive. I began to mix traditional styles and materials. I worked in many workshops with the hope of learning all that I could about a variety of products and techniques. I met many local and foreign designers. In 1999, I moved to France, where I continued to cultivate the pleasure of discovering the multiplicity of art. I worked in an interior design studio as an apprentice, to learn more about western art styles, especially for home decoration and design.
"I returned in 2000 and worked as an agent of traditional art for a French company. I was able to open my own workshop at the beginning of 2005, where I specialize in lamps and furniture.
"My designs are a blend of traditions and materials as well as my own creativity. My style is marked by my constant desire to move between the past and the future."
