This hand-carved mask from Balinese artisan Suparta depicts the hero of a well-known Balinese legend, Jaya Prana. In a tale of star-crossed lovers reminiscent of 'Romeo and Juliet', a king kills Jaya Prana so that he can marry the young man's sweetheart Layonsari himself; but the girl kills herself out of grief for her beloved. Suparta gives the mask a rustic, aged finish that lends it the look of a precious antiquity.
