In Bali, Dewi Sri is the consort of Wisnu, the god of sustenance and the Balinese equivalent of Vishnu. Because rice is so important to the sustenance of the Balinese, she is given the specific title of Rice Goddess. There is a shrine for offerings to her beside every rice field in Bali. Dewi Sri is often depicted flying... to indicate her beneficent blessing of crops the whole island over. Nyoman Naranata sculpts a lovely mask from hibiscus wood, capturing her serene beauty. Unhusked rice forms her hair.
Hibiscus wood exhibits colors ranging from white to light gray, dark gray or even black heartwood. This natural occurrence can rarely be replicated, making each carving exceptionally unique. Please expect slight differences in wood grain color and distribution patterns. Theme and artistic quality remain the same.
