Details

According to the beliefs of the Akan people of Ghana, anyone with a ti kese ("big head") is said to be very knowledgeable. Court linguists, for example, were said to have big heads, although they would also be the subject of ridicule by passersby. George Obeng celebrates this legendary Akan custom with a hand-carved sese wood mask. He paints it with bright colors and adorns it with ornate brass plates.
