The Central Institute of the People was founded in 1906 by H.C. Tucker, first pastor of the Union Church and one of the founders of the American Society and the Brazil – United States Institute. The institute is currently under the caring guidance of Mr. Marion Way, Volunteer Vice Director. Central Institute of the People is a community center and school. It caters for over 450 children aged 2-15 years in an day-long programs that include day-care center, kindergarten, first to fifth grades, tutoring, recreation, etc.

The Institute is in association with a health clinic which provides medical, eye and dental care to the community. The Institute has two more branches in the province, including a camp site where children go in January and February.

The Institute reaches out to the community in a variety of ways and in its attempt to meet the needs of the community it relies on donations from outside sources and volunteer support. The Institute is in a unique situation where it provides a positive influence to the people in the heart of the city.

Proceeds from the sale of their products will be destined to aid and assist immigrant women in Brazil.
