Duangkamol

"I hope more people will understand and appreciate the art of Celadon ceramic. Each piece that I make has many stories to tell."

"My name is Duangkamol Srisukri, born in Bangkok in 1957. I have an elder brother and an elder sister. My parents were part of the first group of doctors who were assigned to work in Chiang Mai at Suan Dok Hospital, the biggest government hospital in Chiang Mai and in Northern Thailand. My father was a pediatrician and my mother was a forensic doctor. When my father was working as Dean of the Pediatric Faculty at Chiang Mai University, he got together with his good friends, Mr. Gibson and Mr. Walker, and founded a ceramic workshop out of their shared passion in Celadon and stoneware.

"Most of my works are both Thai and Chinese reproductions like vases, ginger jars, and figurines. My intention is to maintain the ancient art of making Celadon and stoneware so that our future generations can enjoy these pieces. Together with other artists, we have created beautiful handcrafted pieces with ornate incisions and bas relief.

"My work and my clients have changed over time. In the past, the majority of my clients have been elder generations who liked only replica pieces like vases or lidded containers fully incised or in bas relief. Nowadays, most of our clients' age range goes from 17 to 80 years old, with a variety of preferences that go from traditional to modernistic styles. Therefore, I have been concentrating on both traditional and modern pieces.

"I have always loved to draw, which is why I started working at my parents' workshop. As time passed, I learned the full process from my hands-on experience. Mr. Walker, one of my parents' best friends, taught me the recipe for the wood ash glaze. I have also learned other glaze recipes from many ceramic experts in order to add more color options to our products. I must say that working with glazes is one of my favorite forms of art.

"I never feel tired of working in Celadon ceramics, which I have been doing since 1980.

"My intention is to do my best when making beautiful art pieces for clients to enjoy. This is the most important award for my work. Seeing that clients are pleased with my works and to see repeated customers is my best inspiration. This motivates me to work harder and pay more attention to details in order to have great art pieces for my clients.

"Each piece that I work on involves hours of reading and researching to get the most accurate details about the pieces. Once details have been fully collected, a master piece is created. After many trials, a master piece is completed and tested. Finding time to sharpen my skills is probably one of the most difficult tasks to put on my agenda. I am at the factory six days a week. I would like to have more time to refresh my mind and skills.

"My favorite animal is the cat. I think cats are very interesting and charming. I have worked on several figurines and even some dinnerware in the shape of cats. Even at the kilns, I have some cats around to keep me company.

"I have not taught my craft to the public. As I am working at the kilns, I do more information sharing with the people that I work with.

"I hope that my products will inspire a lot of people to see the beauty of ceramics. I hope more people will understand and appreciate the art of Celadon ceramic. Each piece that I make has many stories to tell. Each piece is individually signed by the artist who has worked on it.

"Having my work featured on Novica's site is very good because people can enjoy seeing many beautiful pieces of art by sitting at home in front of the computer. Being able to click on a country or area of the world that people would like to visit in a minute is and indescribable experience.

"Thailand has many wonderful forms of arts. Visiting Thailand will definitely be an invaluable trip to experience many cultures all in one country. Thailand is a big melting pot for Thai, Chinese, Indian, and many other cultures. You can see all of these cultures in many of my pieces too."

Please note Duangkamol works with a team of master ceramists, and therefore each piece is signed by the person who made it.

I just received the "Elegant Equine," and it does, indeed, capture the elegance, beauty, and strength of the horse. It is a lovely and sophisticated piece, and one I know will continue to bring me and others much enjoyment. Thanks once again to Novica and the wonderful artists associated with it.

I ordered 2 pairs of Celadon ceramic ornaments, 'A Season for Horses' - one for me & one for a gift. I love their pale celadon colour and sleek feel. Just perfect! Thanks, Duangkamol.

Dear Duangkamol, I purchased 'A Season of Horses' and 'Good Luck Cats' for my husband for Christmas. The horses were on backorder at the time of purchase, but I had a feeling they would arrive in time for the holiday. Both are gift-wrapped, so I haven't seen them yet, but I'm certain we will be delighted. Thank you so much!!! I will write again after Christmas. Best wishes and luck to you. ~Lisa

Dear Duangkamol, I ordered 'Good Luck Cats' and 'A Season for Horses'. Both were gifts for my husband for Christmas. The little horses are so pretty and elegant! The lucky cats are exactly as I imagined - so adorable - we smile whenever we see them. They have the perfect place in our home-office. Thank you very much for making sure both gifts arrived in time for Christmas. Best wishes to you! ~Lisa

I am thrilled with the 2 celadon vases I got that were made by Duangkamol (the green Valley Lily and Lavender Universe). Both are exquisite!

Dear Duangkamol - I purchased a pair of Good Luck Cats at Christmastime and loved them the moment they arrived! I gave one as a gift and kept one because he was just so cheerful and expressive...I couldn't bear to part with him! As a gift for Christmas, I received a framed group photo of my yoga teacher-training class. When this Good Luck kitty is paired with the photo of all of us trainees (who have our yoga-arms raised to the sky), it's a match that was meant to be. Thank you for such a happy lucky little guy! He's perfectly adorable and such a pleasure to see every day. When I get my permanent desk at work, both GL Cat and the photo will be together in a place of honor. I love these kitties and anyone who buys them will love them as well.

I ordered the collection of small celadon vases by Duangkamol for a gift, and they were absolutely stunning. Each was individually signed on the bottom, and the glaze and workmanship of the vases was so beautiful and intricate. I would recommend viewing and purchasing her pottery items, and I will definitely be keeping an eye out for her new treasures.

I just received my celadon "Good Luck Cats" and they are so delightful and lift the spirits! I have a few other celadon pieces, including a pair of little house incense burners - not sure if they were produced by you .Your work is lovely and calming.

I love celadon -- the variation in green colors, the subtle crackle to the glaze, and Duangkamol's playful sensibility in her work. Her pieces have a special place of honor in my apartment.

I purchased Celadon ceramic statuettes, 'Good Luck Cats' for my husband. He absolutely loved them. I then purchased Celadon ceramic ornaments, 'Blue Winter Horses' and Celadon ceramic ornaments, 'A Season for Horses' for me. I can't tell you how much I love the horses, especially the 'Blue Winter Horses'. The quality of Ms Duangkamol's work is beyond description.

I have bought 3 different items from Ms Duangkamol and I can't express enough how much I love the pieces. The Celadon cats I bought for my husband are adorable. He has one on his desk at work and he gave me the other for mine. And I love the Celadon Horses. But my favorite so far are the Blue Winter Horses. I love these pieces and I love my horses. I look forward to buying more pieces in the future. Thank you Ms Duangkamol

Thank you Duangkamol! My "Winter Blue Horses" are wonderful. I had the lighter green Celadon pair in my Wish List, but when I went to place my order, those were temporarily out of stock. I "needed" to use my special Gift Certificate from Novica, so decided to buy the "Winter Blue Horses" pair instead. What beauties! When I received them, I could see why all of the horses ornaments have received rave reviews. One of these will be a gift for a friend of mine, but I get to enjoy it until April (her birthday). Maybe next time, I will get the green Celadon? I still have them in my Wish List. I did buy these because of the "stories" (smile). I was born in "Year of the Horse" and my friend owns a horse - so we are kind of like "Sisters". Both about the same age - and both of us wear our hair in a long pony tail from time to time....and we both have a passion for well crafted art objects. I have given her many Fair Trade items. I know she will cherish her little horse. Judy - Lima, Ohio
