Pah

"I have always had to fight for my dreams through most of my life. Life is what it is because our surroundings and our world are continuously changing."

"Sawasdee khrap. My name is Somchai Luxamijaraswong and I was born on November 13, 1937. My father is Chinese and my mother is Thai, and I'm the fourth of five children. Now friends and relatives have taken to calling me 'Pah,' which is the Chinese word for 'dad.' Everyone in our family has always had to work hard, and now my siblings and I specialize in different fields.

"I started working for a factory specializing in brass sculptures. I learned all there is to know about this wonderful art and my ambition was to set up my own workshop. But I didn't have enough money then so I took on other jobs until I had saved enough. In 1977 I finally had the resources needed to start working on my own.

"I would describe myself as hardworking - I design the pieces and I work with a team of colleagues who are experts in brass sculpting. Our products are completely handcrafted with traditional techniques, like the lost wax one.

"Each of my products is unique. They are embellished by each team-member's unique artistry. My style, for example, is influence by ancient Chinese art. Our products are of the highest quality possible.

"I have always had to fight for my dreams through most of my life. Life is what it is because our surroundings and our world are continuously changing. People must also continuously change and develop in order to belong to their environment. I believe that this is one of the biggest challenges in people's lives."

I wish to convey to Pah and his artisans how delighted I am with Peace Angel. It is beautifully detailed and conveys a sense of reverence and peacefulness. When I display it, I plan to put Pah's story beside it so everyone can read it. Thank you Pah for your vision of beauty.
