Efrain Curi "I feel appreciation for everything I make. I pause to observe my work to know if I am improving or not." Born in the state of Huancavelica, Efrain Curi first learned the flat weave technique in his uncle's workshop, in what is a family craft. Finding words to express his thoughts and ideas is difficult for Curi since his first language is Quechua, but he speaks eloquently through his work. He prefers natural fibers such as wool and cotton tinted with natural and artificial dyes. His tool is the handloom and he usually weaves in the company of his family. The children find it fun to help out, and Curi hopes to eventually teach them all he knows about weaving. He has exhibited his work and won prizes for it in contests such as one organized by a wool company, where he took first place in 2000 and second place in 2001. "I have put a great deal of effort to being where I am today," he says. "My goal is to become recognized as a master weaver, but that will take many more years. I feel appreciation for everything I make. I pause to observe my work to know if I am improving or not." |

Thank you. - K.F. R, New York I have the hand-woven Peruvian tapestry called "MARIPOSAS" by Efrain Curi. This piece has not only fine workmanship, but also such rich, harmonious colors and exotic design that I can see and feel the richness of Peruvian culture as I gaze at it on my wall. Thank you, Efrain, for your artistic vision and for helping to keep your beautiful country's traditions alive. I've always loved Peru !!! - CHARLES R., FLORIDA, USA The rug is absolutely beautiful! I want another rug because it is so cheery with the amazing colors complimenting each other. What a artist! - Mary H, Lititz PA USA Dear Efrain, I have just received several of your magnificent weavings, and I feel as if I am dancing in colors!! Your talent is enormous!!! Where do I begin?! How about "Illusion"? -- I have absolutely NO idea how you managed to design and weave that one!!! It is marvelously baffling, and endlessly intriguing! (I am donating it to my daughter's school, for their Math class -- her teacher won't believe her eyes!!) And "Eden in the Andes" is absolutely glorious!! -- I truly feel as if you have taken me there, on a magical journey, as I gaze on the colors. Then there is your charming wool rug, "Spring Flower", which will be placed on my daughter's bedroom floor -- once she can decide which color, out of your rainbow tapestry, she wants to paint her walls!! "Birds and Parakeets" will hang on her wall -- isn't she lucky, to be surrounded by your art?! "Heavenly Bodies" is, literally, out of this world: your selection of colors and shapes is beyond anything I have ever seen -- and I absolutely LOVE it!!!! THANK YOU FOR BRINGING A WHOLE NEW WORLD INTO OUR HOME!! Love, your "Fan", Katherine Sherpa, Charleston, SC USA - KAMA |
