Tatang's art comes from his family who has been creating handicrafts from natural materials from generation to generation. "I am the third generation of artisans," he says with pride. "My parents have been my great inspiration in facing life. They are hard workers and willing to do anything for their children."
Though he is based in Java, Tatang's baskets, bags, hats and more can be seen all over Indonesia.
Each piece requires a long process. First the natural material is harvested, then dried and colored before it is woven into the desired shape. Each piece is individually crafted with traditional techniques that result in slight differences of size, color and shape. Thus each piece is a unique work of art.
"I often travel to different places in Indonesia for my work and leave my wife and child in Java. But they are great supporters and I'll do my best for them," Tatang says.
