About this Artist

Daniel Wijaya was born in Jakarta on November 27, 1971 and grew up in the city. But he moved to Galatiga in Central Java to study for a degree in marketing. He then had an opportunity to go to Honolulu, where he received his master's degree. Wijaya returned to Indonesia but, due to the financial crisis that hit Asia in 1998, he lost his job.

From the time he was very young, his hobby was photography and art – especially interior design. When he found himself without a job, Wijaya decided to work on his own in a field related to his passion for art.

"In 1999, I decided to move to Bali," he says. "And on this beautiful island I get inspiration from the global community that lives here. I think my pieces are fresh and different, and I like the idea of helping people to be in touch with nature in this busy modern life."

The artisan married in Bali and the couple has three dogs. "I love my life here in Bali. I enjoy my work, my living, and this island keeps me creative," Wijaya says.

"Many people tend to associate traditional ethnic home accessories with something old, complicated and expensive. Therefore my challenge has been to create simple, modern and functional art pieces for the home that still strongly relate to ethnic Asia. Their natural touch suits them to a modern cosmopolitan life style. With your appreciation of our designs, we will work harder, think smarter and live better."

Because the piece was so beautifully wrapped I have not opened it, and it is a birthday present for a lady friend. When I see it I will send my views to you. Thank you. Keith Baynes

I purchased a set of 3 sandstone boxes from Mr. Wijaya. They lool like globes that have been scooped out of the earth and are so simple and so lovely. I've placed them on the dresser in my bedroom and they look beautiful against the wood. And, as Mr. Wijaya himself says, they help "people to be in touch with nature in this busy modern life."
