Kachchhi Hastkala Maha Mandal (KHMM), means "Artisans of Kachchh." Organized in 2002, it is a community based, registered artisan federation. KHMM was formed as part of a long-term strategy to rehabilitate and improve the livelihood of artisans affected by the massive earthquake which hit Gujarat that year. Kachchh, in particular, was greatly affected by the quake.
KHMM is supported by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FICCI–Care). It unites some 250 artisans in groups throughout the town, providing each group with the needed materials, then marketing their works in exhibitions in which each can display their creations.
The unique beauty of Kachchh's traditional handicrafts is mesmerizing. Their vibrant colors and exquisite craftsmanship reveal the region's vast array of traditions and cultural manifestations. The art of Kachchh was inspired by the ancient Indus Valley civilizations and its nomadic tribes. KHMM creates high quality products that feature embroidery, weaving, tie-dyeing, hand-block printing, metal work, hand-made paper products and terracotta, all wrought with traditional techniques.
Achieving global recognition is an objective of the group. A founding member of KHMM says, "For an organization such as ours, it is very important to have proper exposure of our products to those who understand and appreciate the artisans' effort, time, standards, and quality of work. Novica's idea of promoting our work through the website is of immense help to us."
