Born in Junin on June 24, 1960, Juan León Ponce crafts musical instruments. His art is a family tradition. Ponce remembers helping his father create
tinyas – drums – while still a child. Their instruments were played by a number of musical groups in traditional fiestas and celebrations.
Over the years, Ponce perfected his technique, permitting him to create innovative percussion instruments, more modern and refined. In 2003, he opened his own small workshop where he and his family use manual tools to craft their instruments. Goatskin,
mate gourds,
cumala and
alisa wood, ceramic balls and ropes provide their materials.
"I feel the same pleasure with each instrument I make," Ponce confides. "I work with my family, and we place all our love and dedication in every piece. Our goal is to keep alive the traditions of the Andes."
