"My brother belonged to a group of master carvers in Bali who worked side-by-side for decades. Now, 28 years later, this woodcarving group still exists and I am its elected leader.
"In the beginning, my older brother, Wayan Sukamara, taught me the various techniques of sanding and finishing. In 1974 I began to sculpt, taking inspiration from some of the finest statues and carvings of our region. The traditional forms and poses were of strong beauty and fine workmanship, which inspired me to learn this style.
"My favorite statue themes are the Singa, Chili, Garuda, Sri Pudhak, Legong, and Barong. Rama and Sita are my favorite subjects for masks; these are traditional characters in religious mythology and offer a variety of ways for an artist to express creativity and style. For the past four or five years my work has been featured in exhibits in Bali.
"The influence of my younger years has continued to guide my work. What I wish now is to continue upholding the values of those who taught and inspired me, while being able to continue taking very good care of my family and my woodcarving group.
"In 1977 I married Nyoman Jati. We now have four girls and one boy; three of them have finished school. We live in the same village where I was born.
"I have a funny story, one you might not understand if you did not grow up in Bali: It happened once when I brought some of my carvings to Denpasar, our biggest town. I visited the shopping center there, and saw an escalator for the very first time. I really wanted to try it, but, not understanding how it worked, I tripped and fell. Everybody laughed at me. They thought it was very funny, but I was terribly embarrassed!"
I don't have any words to express how I feel about the mask I received yesterday called "Legong Keraton", all I can say is that it is so beautiful, and I have not yet hung it on my wall yet, due to the fact that I just love picking it up, and looking at every intricate detail to it. It is a wonderfully made piece that I will treasure my whole life....thank you Nyoman Subrata!! I also watched the video of him and his family hard at work...very wonderful, Thank you again so much!! I just received Nyoman Subrata's Legong Keraton Dancer. It is not a large piece, but it is exquisite! The intricate carving and the artistic use of the natural grain of the wood are both signs that he a great master carver. The shipment came as a 'gift box'. (I was not expecting this) I have NEVER received such a beautifully boxed gift. I hardly feel like I 'bought' this carved mask - it feels like a personal gift. Thank you so much, Nyoman Subrata! When I visit Bali (a life dream), I will try to find you and thank you in person.

I now have several pieces carved by this master. The latest just arrived - a most wonderful and massive Ganesh. Smooth where he should be, and intricately carved elsewhere, he is a marvel to the touch. No one here can keep their hands off him - he begs to be touched, and I expect he will soon bear the gentle polish of many hands.

The "Beautiful Sita" mask is so incredibly beautiful! The face is smooth and serene. The detail on the headress is exquisitely carved. We put this mask in the center of our Library and even added spotlights to show it off. Stunning! Thank you so much Nyoman.

The Janger Dancer mask and Balinese Woman II pieces by Nyoman Subrata arrived very securely and professionally packed. The little hand-made decoration on each package is a nice touch. Both pieces are exquisite. The intricate details on the Janger Dancer mask are crisp and fine. I am blown away by the artistry and craftsmanship on both pieces. I recently purchased the Prince and Princess Mermaids wall panel and it's absolutely exquisite. The pictures from the site didn't do to a scrap of justice to what's now the perfect centerpiece for my bedroom. A pity I wouldn't have room for all of this artist's work!
