About this Artist

"Ading is a short and simple name my parent gave me. My life is as simple as my name, but my life shouldn't be as short as it is. I was born on October 17, 1966 in West Java province. Playing traditional music is my hobby; I can play most of the traditional instruments. At one point I said to myself, 'Why can't I make those traditional instruments by my own hand?' Then I went about learning how to make them, and in 1991 I opened my own art shop. In 1999 I married a beautiful Javanese woman. She is very helpful in my work - she is the one who watches my art shop in the afternoon. She is also a good wife to me; she makes my work in the shop possible.

"In making various kinds of traditional musical instruments, I use mahogany wood, jackfruit wood, and bamboo. It needs patience and practice to get the right tone from each musical instrument. I'm very grateful for what Novica is doing in promoting my works to the whole world."

The Mahogany kalimba thumb piano Compassion is listed as a decorative piece, but it's every bit as fun to play as any of the other three kalimbas I own. I did re-tune it, but that's easy for a non-musician to do, and one more way to connect with your instrument. It may not have the ringing clarity of a Hugh Tracy, but then the Tracy doesn't have the Compassion's enjoyable funkiness.

Ading's drum "Resonance" is a wonderful, collectible piece of art as well as an incredible instrument. It is also a learning tool. As my husband plays "Resonance", our two-year old son plays along on his toy drum, promoting family time as well as musical education.

I have just received my Kalimba "hexagon" which was made by Ading and I wish to thank him and Novica for this melodic instrument sent so quickly. I purchased this for my grandson, and since I have never seen a Kalimba played before, nor heard it in a piece of music, I wonder if Ading could tell us if the metal pieces are pulled up or pushed down, or does it matter? Also, are there any tapes or cd's with Balinese music? I think this would be a good sales feature. Thank you again!
