Pascual Fernandez is a skilled and artistic weaver from Ayacucho who was born into a family of artisans in 1976. He has dedicated himself entirely to the family tradition since 1987, and since that early age has created splendid weavings full of vivid color and refined finish. The tapestries portray rural existence with simplicity and beauty as the people from the region go about their daily life.
"I belong to a family of textile artisans. I also took up this activity 13 years ago, learning from the experience of my parents and also from my grandparents. At the same time I start making innovations of my own.
"I create my own designs which I weave from blends of wool (98%) and cotton (2%) dyed with both natural and industrial dyes. My wooden loom is my principal tool, and was built specifically for this kind of weaving. I portray both animal and geometric figures taken from the ancient Peruvian cultures and also the intricate Inca calendars. Each piece is a cultural expression, and I hope that through Novica my weavings will become known abroad because I am sure that people will appreciate my art and technique that goes back to my ancestors."
Pascual Fernandez produces select pieces that are like a window onto the grandeur and glorious culture of Peru.
