Gilberto Cabral's parents recognized their son's interest in painting from an early age, and thus encouraged his artistic inclinations – they zealously guard his first attempts at painting, a collection of "monsters and heroes." In 1989, Gilberto formally entered the world of art when he enrolled in art classes with renowned Brazilian artist Castelo Branco.
Though he was constantly being praised for his work, Gilberto decided to drop out of the course after two months, wishing to follow his own path and forge his career. He chose to learn instead from different artists that specialized in different styles, such as Carlomagno, Claudio Dantas and Oscar Palácios. Gilberto credits their influence in his early surrealism work.
By 1991, Gilberto was receiving various accolades for his work, such as an Honorary mention at the Salão Militar, and the Prêmio de Aquisição. In 1996 he studied composition with Giangudo Bonfatti, and painting a live model with Manuel Fernades at Parque Laje. Since then, Gilberto has been working with different galleries in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, and Minas Gerais, as well as in the United States.
Gilberto is a man of many interests; he holds a degree in Economy and has taken specialization courses in art history, engraving and art restoration. He has experimented with diverse artistic styles though in essence he remains focused on figurative art. Gilberto acknowledges a direct influence from German expressionism, his greatest passion, and credits human being as the major artists in his art.
