Indah and Indra

Indah and Indra are a husband and wife team from Java specializing in wood batik artistry. They share their story with Novica.

"We have always worked as a team, starting with batik on textiles. Eventually we decided to transfer traditional batik printing techniques on wood, which is a rare and unique art form.

"We work at our own family workshop and we are assisted by several women artists, since wood batik requires careful detail. For example, it can take up to nine days just to complete a small mirror.

"Our family is our main source of encouragement, and we work really hard, always keeping the spirit of our family unity. Indra (my husband) focuses more on the designs, while I look after the administrative side. We like to work like that, as a team. We have been working like this since 1994, and it has always worked great."
