Born in Lima on June 6, 1954, Bertha Herrera has worked in the ceramic arts since 1998. She looks for inspiration in pre-Hispanic art and specializes in hand-painted ceramic masks with iconography from a number of Andean cultures. A history buff, she is also an avid reader.
Herrera spends part of her time painting on ceramics and also enjoys working on plates and vases. A favorite technique of hers gives an antique effect. "I like pre-Hispanic art," she says. "With only simple tools and materials our forefathers were capable of creating such beautiful works. This kind of expression is admirable and is one of our people's great cultural values.
"I hope you appreciate the art of our ancestors in my ceramics. I try to make them look like archeological pieces by retouching them with dark colors and stains. I hope you like my work."
