Gerardo Fernandez

ENGLISH: Born in 1960, in the legendary village of Ayacucho, cradle of artisans famous for their magnificent tapestries, Gerardo Fernandez is a master in the textile art. He learned in the workshop, practicing, guided by old masters. Years of observation and perseverance have yielded fruits, and today he is one of the most representative and promising values of this handicraft.

"I was born in the Santa Ana suburb in Ayacucho. I can say that I inherited the textile art because my ancestors, my grandparents and my own fathers have been lovingly dedicated to it. I have harvested all their learnings. My youth passed amidst looms and colorful wool. Through the years, my work confirmed my craft, allowing me to create new designs and color compositions, though never abandoning the traditional technique.

"I'm inspired by our culture, the Andean landscape, the daily scenes in the sierra, but I prefer the Wari and Paracas cultures. My raw material is a blend of sheep wool and cotton in a ninety to ten ratio. Our wool is dyed with natural pigments, obtained from the cochinieal insect and plants growing at this altitude. I have a team of six operators in my workshop, and thanks to their effort, our production is sustained. I'm very interested in offering our products through Novica, as our textile art, proud messenger of the Peruvian culture, deserves to be known all over the world."
